What we offer

Digging Services in Hobart

Garden and Landscape Digging

Beds, ponds, edges and planting areas dug to size, helping you reshape your yard faster than you could with a shovel and a free weekend. We shape edges, form planting beds and dig water features, saving you days of labour.

Post Hole and Fence Digging

Holes drilled at the correct depth and spacing for fence posts, pergolas and signs, leaving a tidy site and posts that stand straight and firm. Auger equipment gives clean, consistent holes quickly, keeping your fence lines straight and posts firm.

Drainage and Soakwell Digging

Pits and channels for soakwells, agricultural drains and stormwater lines, positioned to move water away from buildings and prevent damp problems around your home. We size and position pits to suit your soil and rainfall, and connect them to downpipes.

Small Site Digging

Compact machines for tight backyards and narrow side access, which allows work to proceed without damaging fences, lawns or neighbouring properties. Compact excavators and hand digging let us work around fences, pipes, trees and sheds without damaging gardens or lawns.

Digging Before Concrete Work

Preparation of paths, pads, steps and slabs, with accurate depths ready for base material, so the following concrete work goes in smoothly. Digging to the right depth and width at the start prevents rework and supports your concrete or paving.

Clean Up and Spoil Management

Soil spread, stockpiled or removed according to your preference, with the area left tidy so you can get on with landscaping or building. We spread soil around your yard, stockpile it or load it out, then rake the area level.

Why choose us

Why Choose Our Hobart Digging Experts

Equipment Suited To Each Hole

Post holes, footings and tank pits all need different gear. We choose between an auger, a mini excavator or hand digging based on the task, instead of forcing one machine to do every job.

Access Where Trucks Cannot Go

Many backyards in older suburbs and on steep blocks have no vehicle access at all. Compact machines that fit through a standard gate, or hand digging where nothing else will, mean the work still gets done.

Services Located Every Time

A lot of service strikes happen on small jobs, because a post hole seems too minor to check. We look up Before You Dig Australia plans and hand dig near known lines rather than relying on old drawings.

Uniform Holes Along The Line

Fence posts and piles need holes of matching depth and width. We set out the line carefully and dig to a consistent specification, so the next trade can install without adjusting hole by hole.

Firm, Clean Footing Bases

Loose soil left in the bottom of a footing means the concrete sits on nothing solid. We clean each base down to firm ground, which takes a little longer and makes a real structural difference.

Soil Spread or Carted Away

Even a few holes produce more spoil than expected. We spread it where you would like it or load and remove it from site, so you are not left with a pile of dirt on the lawn.

Digging FAQs

Common questions about digging in Hobart — how it differs from excavation, post hole depths, what happens when we hit rock, and dealing with spoil.

Mostly scale and purpose, and the line is genuinely blurry. We use excavation for bulk earthworks — cutting a house site, benching a driveway into a slope, or moving significant volume around a property. Digging covers the targeted jobs: post and pier holes, footings, rainwater tank pads, stump removal and planting holes. They often need different machinery, different crew sizes and different pricing. If you are not sure which describes your job, just tell us what you need done and we will work out the best approach and give you a clear quote for it.

A common guide is roughly a third of the post's above-ground height going below ground, so a 1.8 metre fence generally wants holes around 600mm deep, and gate posts or anything carrying real load want more. Ground conditions change that. Soft or filled ground needs more depth to reach firm material, reactive clay can push posts around as it wets and dries, and a post on a slope needs extra depth on the downhill side. Where an engineer or building plans specify footing sizes, for a deck or pergola for example, those take priority. Tell us what the posts are carrying and we will dig to suit.

In Hobart it is a fair possibility. Much of the area sits on dolerite or sandstone, sometimes only a short way below the topsoil, and it is hard to predict exactly where until we start digging. Sandstone can often be dug or broken with the right attachment, but solid dolerite is very hard and may need a hydraulic rock breaker or core drilling, which slows the job and adds cost. Sometimes a hole can be moved slightly to avoid a boulder. We will discuss the likelihood of rock at the site visit and explain how we would price it if we find it.

Not if the checking is done properly, and small jobs are exactly where this gets skipped. A post hole feels too minor to bother with, which is why so many service strikes happen on them. Before digging we lodge a Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) request, read the surface evidence, and where a line is known or suspected we expose it by hand first. BYDA plans do not show private lines, so if you know roughly where anything runs — an irrigation line, a cable to a shed, a stormwater pipe someone added — tell us. That local knowledge is often better than any plan.

Yes, and it is worth deciding early how you want it handled. If the soil is decent and you have somewhere for it, spreading it on site costs nothing extra and can be useful for levelling a low spot or building up garden beds. If not, we load it and cart it away. Even small jobs carry a cost for this, because there is a truck, a trip and a tip fee involved, and steep driveways or tight access can mean barrowing it out first. We are happy to price both options if it is not obvious which suits.
